An interesting article by Regus and Magazine UK highlights the best countries for digital nomads to work from in these times. With COVID-19 regulations relaxing and tourism revenue down, some countries are offering up new perks to lure “digital nomads” to their shores. The idea behind digital nomads is that remote work could be done from anywhere in the world, and certain individuals have been taking advantage of this opportunity to work among beautiful and foreign sceneries. Though digital nomads have been around pre-pandemic, the shift to remote work across the globe due to the pandemic has made this lifestyle more widespread and easily accessible.

Certain countries are offering formalized arrangements, dubbed ‘digital nomad visas,’ (DNV) that allow longer stays in a country than regular tourist visas. These visas allow remote workers to balance their business requirements with a change of scenery, local culture and, depending on where they go, sunnier weather. To qualify for a DNV, remote workers will typically need to prove a certain level of stable income. This lifestyle is very popular with over 4.8 million independent workers in the United States describing themselves as digital nomads.

Almost 20 countries now offer DNVs, with more set to adapt them throughout 2021. For these countries, digital nomads contribute to the local economy by spending in their hotels, restaurants, shops and also paying for the visa. Embracing digital nomads is one way for countries to close the gap created by a lack of tourism revenue due to the pandemic.
