On Tuesday September 4th, 2018, I had the pleasure of attending the Global Trade: Leveraging Washington D.C. for the SME Community in a Time of Change Event at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C. Thank you Aaron Miller for inviting me, it was an amazing time. I learned a lot and was able to connect with so many important people in the global trade industry. Brought to us by the Virginia and Washington D.C. District Export Council, this half-day program featured global experts who shared tips and insights on how to make Washington D.C. work for your global objective. Here are our 5 highlights from this event.

Aaron Miller, Vice Chairman District Export Council, International Trade Manager VA SBDC

5 Highlights from Global Trade: Leveraging Washington D.C. for the SME Community in a Time of Change Event:

  1. There was a great line up of speakers discussing the implications for American SME’s of a changed global environment including Scott Blacklin, Chairman, Virginia/DC District Export Council and  Chris Millar, Founder and CEO, Gatekeeper.
  2. Matthew Reisman, Director, International Trade Policy at Microsoft discussed how to manage trade policy in the post-globalization era.
  3. Brett Bruen, President, Global Situation Room gave a great presentation on navigating global risk and how to apply a national security mindset to your business.
  4. Bill Lane, Executive Director, Trade for America, Derek Gianino National Engagement Director, U.S. Global Leadership Coalition and Andy Karellas, Executive Director, State International Development Organization  all presented a segment called “An Agenda for SME Exporters”.
  5. Tomas Baert, Head of the Trade and Agricultural Section, Delegation of the European Union to the United States and Anna Gawel, Managing Editor for the Washington Diplomat discussed transatlantic trade policy and its implications for SME’s. Hopefully with the great negotiator as Tomas, we will have positive development of the policies in the future.

Big thanks to the event organizers again. This great event delivered a ton of useful information that people in trade were so in need of. I am looking forward for the next events on the same topic.
